Alphanumeric includes both upper and lower case letters (and perhaps you must keep other characters too, for example the dash) - any such adjustments are easy to make below.

Note on the WHERE clause (used to make sure only the rows that must be updated are in fact updated - especially important if only a small fraction of the original rows do need to be updated): the idea is that the condition should be where the new value of col is different from the old - but we must handle NULL in Oracle.
